06 Dec Search Engine Optimisation Basics – Sphere Architects
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the process of getting traffic from the ‘free,’ ‘organic,’ ‘editorial’ or ‘natural’ search results on search engines. All major search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo are where web pages and other content such as videos or local listings are shown and ranked based on what the search engine considers most relevant to users.
A client was having trouble ranking for their own name on Google, Sphere Architects approached us and requested that we help them get to the first page of a Google search for their own name “Sphere Architects”. When we first had a look at their website it was clear why they were not ranking, there were no title tags, meta descriptions, headings or a sitemap.
We agreed to help them and in a few hours had re-structured their website to conform to the search engines preferences. We started by adding headings, so simple yet so crucial, search engines look for the H1 (Heading 1) on the page it lands on to find out what is most important/what the page is talking about.
TIP: Use a EMD (exact domain match) where possible, for example if your company is called TLC construction your domain should be TLCconstruction.com.au
Secondly we added a plugin that let us write the meta descriptions, title tags and gave us a sitemap. We used Yoast Premium which costs 89USD.
Our goal was to get them ranking for their own name so we used “Sphere Architects” as the key-phrase/keyword for the home page. Before you start building a website you need to decide what you would like to rank for, it is important that you use the key-phrase/keyword throughout your website page.
Yoast Premium also helps you structure your content, all you need is a focus key-phrase/keyword and hey presto as you build the page Yoast advises you what you need to change to rank for your key-phrase/keyword.
